About Me

I am a currently an MFA student in University of Miami's film school, recently graduated from Brown. I'm an aspiring singer, actor, writer, and/or filmmaker... basically, I'll take what I can get. My first true love is performing, but the film critic in me just won't shut up, and I love writing and directing things, too. I think I wear too many hats (literally and figuratively). This blog is an outlet for my many wild passions, and a way to kill all my spare time. Also, I like to keep my sidebar REALLY full, so if you wanna see archives, just keep on scrolling down ; )

I really really don't want Meryl Streep to be nominated. There are so many more deserving contenders (Winslet, Bening and Mirren having never won) and there could be some much superior performances in the running (Cruz, Paquin, Moore). I just found Streep's performance a big non-event.
Swap Judd for Cruz and that's my lineup at the moment.
I really don't think Bug is gonna get Judd a shot of Oscar.
I didn't mean to imply that this was the lineup per se (though it is Nathaniel's lineup and may very well be the one). It's more that these seem to be the only ones with a shot at winning. I actually believe more in Cruz than Judd for a nom, but if Cruz is nommed, there's no way in hell she's gonna win. Judd actually has a chance.
But it's really gonna be Mirren or Winslet, I think.
And sorry, DL, but tough beans. Meryl Streep will be nommed. I don't think she'll win, though, so I wouldn't worry about her stealing it from someone.
...though I actually kinda know how you feel. I'm definitely not as obsessed with Meryl as I was when I first saw the movie; she's faded a bit in the memory. I still love Miranda Priestly a lot, but I don't think she's necessarily statue-worthy. I'd like Meryl to be nommed, but not to win.
And finally, how cool are all these pics? All their expressions together are priceless.
I'm beginning to think we have our winner already... Helen Mirren. I think she'll do what no other "veteran" British actress has ever done: actually win Best Actress.
All roads point to Mirren at this point in time.
Sure, all roads point to Mirren NOW, but when's the last time the frontrunner from September actually ended up winning? Remember the fates of Sissy Spacek and Julianne Moore? Not to mention other old Brits like Judi Dench. There's plenty of time for the Mirren love to die down.
Though she does have that whole "won the Emmy for a queen, and then an oscar for a different queen" hook... but I'd like to think people won't vote for her on that basis alone.
And in the trailer, to me at least, she seems merely "very good"... not exactly the stuff of legend. Oh, biopics...
Excellent points, Adam. There is always an initial frontrunner that ultimately loses steam to a last-minute contender (usually a babe going deglam.)
I mean, at this point last year everyone was 100% convinced that Judi Dench would win her first Lead Actress Oscar for Mrs. Henderson Presents.
Really? I was never convinced of that. I always assumed it'd be Reese or Joan, or maybe Felicity with her deglamming.
But yeah, that illustrates how old Brits never seem to make it through the final stretch.
I still love these pictures. It's like they're all eyeing each other, gauging each other's prospects.
And Meryl seems the most confident of the bunch!
Yeah I know, I love that.
I totally have a feeling Mirren isn't winning this year. She'd be the only one I'd forgive for stealing Winslet's Oscar, but she won at Venice, and no one's won Best Actor or Best Actress at the Oscars when they won in Venice in almost 50 years.
Is it sad I'm happy about that?
No, it's not sad... assuming Winslet is deserving... which she ALWAYS is.
I want her to win, too. And I also doubt all the Mirren hype.
Really, other than last year, when it was assumed that Reese would be a force, the last early-in-the-year frontrunner to actually win the oscar was Julia Roberts in 2000. And both those cases were with romcom queens going dramatic... and they are a different breed, awardswise.
bump judd and replace with julie christie (away from her) - that'd be a classy line-up
Although I'd love to see Mirren win to break the young actress fixation, I also would prefer Winslet to take home the Oscar (that sounds so silly, considering I haven't seen either turn yet.) I guess my reasoning is that lately the Academy has given the Best Actress award to babes that prove themselves once in look-at-me turns, while Winslet has been so consistenly good and never resorting to such attention-whoring. I mean, she's a babe AND a phenomenal actor - what's the problem?
I'm also hoping that guilt over Eternal Sunshine will earn her more votes. Like Sean Penn, who was a perennial nominee for several years before his time came with Mystic River, this should similarly be her year.
And Amy, good point on Venice never correlating with Oscar. The festival prize always guarantees a nod, but never the win.
Well, not "guarentees" (see Javier Bardem), but you know what I mean. Bah, I'll stop posting now.
Well, one thing is becoming clear: whether the winner be Mirren, Winslet, Streep, or even Bening, this Best Actress contest is gonna be SWEEEEEET. None of those choices would upset me. It's kind of a win/win.
Unless Ashley Judd wins. That'd be kind of a let-down.
Or like Nathaniel suggested, Sienna Miller.
Ew, Sienna Miller! Please, god, no.
btw, Ali, don't worry about posting too much here. There is no such thing. Comments are like crack to me.
i think annette will be supporting and it'll come down to a mirren and winslet run.
Check out my post hear: Strange Culture: Mirren: An Oscar Nomination! An Oscar Win?
(I think you'll like the post a lot, i'd love your feedback).

I’m praying to God that Sigourney gets nominated for Snow Cake.
I think Sigourney is supporting in Snow Cake.
